Teignmouth & Dawlish Ramblers - A Brief History

Since 1987, the Teignmouth and Dawlish Group of the Ramblers Association has been organising weekly walks and protecting the rights of ramblers in the area between the rivers Teign and Exe.

The group was founded to cater for the increased number of walkers in the Teignbridge district.  From organising a very wet inaugural ramble on Little Haldon Hill in 1987 to today’s busy programme of walks and social events has meant much hard work and commitment by group volunteers.

We have a membership of approximately 250 - and we have an average of 15 - 20 on each of our Sunday walks.

Over the years the group has organised a wide variety of walks on Dartmoor, Exmoor, and the lowlands of Devon.  Much of the coastal footpath has been walked and the Two Moors Way long distance trail has been completed twice.  The group has also arranged walking holidays in this country and in Europe.

Since the beginning, the T & D Ramblers have held a number of social events - dinners, barn dances, and skittle evenings which, with its walks programmes, means that membership of the group is a good way to make new friends.  If you are looking for a healthy new hobby then rambling is really good for both physical and mental health.

From the beginning the group has been a very active constituent member of the Ramblers Association, protecting local rights of way and campaigning for the protection of and better access to our countryside.  We played an active part in

Getting the Countryside and Rights of Way Act on to the statute books.  Group members have adopted all of the footpaths and bridleways around the two towns, checking they are all walkable, and have attended public enquiries to defend threatened paths.

Only eternal vigilance keeps the countryside and rights of way safe.  So whether you want to walk with us or help protect the paths and the countryside, there is a place for you as a member of the Teignmouth & Dawlish Ramblers.
